Dr. David Mech spent 25 years in the summer months on the Canadian Arctic island of Ellesmere studying wolves. According to him, during these trips, he learned many facts that do not coincide with the generally accepted ideas about wolves.
Some of these facts are not very significant, others only add to the overall picture of our knowledge, but among them, there are things that a specialist considers important. Here are three of them:
According to the new theory, wolves become leaders (also called alpha males and females) not because they win in duels with rivals, but because they find themselves a mate and produce offspring, forming a new flock.
Arctic wolves continue to move during the winter, in the 24-hour polar night (as at any other time of the year) – provided that the cubs are already able to move.
There is evidence that wolves sometimes exhibit “foresight and other signs of highly organized thinking” when hunting.
