The Roman military used these dogs to accompany their legions as they marched through Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa with their livestock. The dogs guarded the herds—the soldiers’ food source—and ensured that they moved efficiently.
They might have a Roman origin but they were taken to Germany when the Roman army decided to conquer Europe.
Today, the Rottweiler is the 10th most popular breed in the U.S.
