Today the Patterdale Terrier is not only a working dog but also a companion. He successfully competes in agility and obedience competitions. A quick-witted dog quickly grasps information and instantly understands what the owner wants from him.
Patterdale Terriers are a relatively new dog to appear on the scene having been bred in the sixties by Brian Nuttall from dogs he had been given by his grandfather.
He used Buck and Breay bloodlines to produce his own, namely the Nuttall bloodline which even today is regarded as one of the best in the country, and as such puppies command a high price for good breeding.
As previously mentioned, these little terriers were developed in the Lake District, where the climate and environment are harsh and hilly. It’s where flocks of sheep graze and where foxes were and are a problem.
