New legislation in Illinois would make leaving pets outside in extreme hot or cold weather punishable with jail time and fines.

Lawmakers already passed the bill through the state Senate and the Illinois House and have sent it to Gov. Bruce Rauner for approval.

If he signs the bill into law, dog owners who expose their pets to extreme weather may face up to a year in jail and fines up to $2,500.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, said the bill is a response to the high number of dog deaths last winter.

It is hoped that the law will lead to fewer pet deaths and help raise awareness about the animal welfare issue.
