The term “Shar-Pei” means “sand skin” or “sand-paper-like coat,” which refers to the dog’s bristle-like coat. The Shar-Pei actually has the ability to use its coat as a defense mechanism.
It can stiffen it when it is attacked to make it uncomfortable for another dog to hold in its mouth. Additionally, when rubbed backward, its prickly coat can cause welts on a sensitive person’s skin.
At the brink of extinction, the dogs were rescued by a Hong Kong businessman name Matgo Law who appealed to American readers in a 1973 edition of Life magazine. Around 200 Shar-Peis were then smuggled into America.
