The Shar-Pei can be described as a highly intelligent, independent dog with dignity. They may be inhospitable to strangers, but loyal to their family. Despite their displeased and frowning expression on the muzzle, Shar-Pei is a very sociable dog.
Because of its fighting ability and prickly coat, the Shar-Pei is also known as the “sharkskin dog,” the “oriental fighting dog,” the “Chinese bulldog,” or the “oriental gladiator.”
During the Communist Revolution, the Shar-Pei population was decimated, because dogs were seen as a luxury and communists slaughtered many of the traditional Chinese breeds.
Shar-Peis have two different types of muzzles: if its muzzle is heavily padded, the Shar-Pei is known as a “meat mouth”; if its mouth is less padded, it is known as a “bone mouth.”
