When the breed was first introduced in England it was called the Shetland Collie but this caused an uproar with Rough Collie breeders and the name was changed to the Shetland Sheepdog.
The breed was accepted by the Kennel Club in England in 1909. The AKC accepted the breed in 1911.
Many fans of the breed affectionately refer to these pups as Shelties.
