Portuguese Water Dogs are active dogs that require a high level of exercise given their work history. Although they are independent by nature, they don’t really like living in a booth and prefer to be with their owners. Water dogs are highly intelligent and need activities to keep them busy to prevent destructive behaviors such as chewing and digging. They should be kept in a large, fenced-in yard to prevent them from escaping.
