The Newfoundland is a huge powerful dog with a spectacular appearance and great temperament. Its purpose is to serve people.
No records exist that can trace the dog’s earliest beginnings, though it’s believed to have descended from the Tibetan Mastiff, with its early ancestors coming to North America via European ships in the 15th and 16th centuries.
The dog’s highly-regarded working reputation resulted in the breed making its way to the European continent on traders’ ships in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Newfoundlands were first shown at the national dog show in Birmingham, England, in 1860. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1886.
