The breed came close to extinction in the ‘50s and ‘60s however three families who left Cuba for the US, built the breed back up and it was ultimately recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1999.
These are alert little lapdogs. Although they do not need a great deal of exercise, they are always up for a game. They are mostly concerned with socializing, though.
Allergies tend to be the biggest problem for the Havanese. These can greatly affect the quality of life.
