Schnauzers of all three species are active and cheerful dogs. Despite the sullen appearance, partly due to overhanging eyebrows, the breed exhibits a light, good-natured disposition.

The name Schnauzer from the German word for “snout” and means colloquially “mustache”, or “whiskered snout”, because of the dog’s distinctively bearded snout.
