Pugs may have gotten their name from monkeys, as monkeys were often kept as pets until the early 18th century and were called pugs. The name could have simply passed on to the dog since both have similar facial features.
In 1572, in the midst of the Eight Years’ War of the Dutch against the Spaniards, the Prince of Orange was rescued by his pug from an assassination attempt by waking him up at night and preventing the assassination attempt.
Pugs have a nice curling tail, but double curls are considered ideal by the standard.
