It descends from the same dogs that contributed to the Siberian Husky, Finnish Spitz, Chow Chow, and Pomeranian. The Keeshond’s ancestors, reportedly, arrived in Europe centuries ago, along with the travelers from the far North.
During the 1400s and 1500s, they were favored by farmers for their instinctive watchdog and guarding capabilities, as well as for their playful and protective nature.
They have an interesting political past. Historically, there is little agreement as to the origin of the name “Keeshond.”
