The main feature of the Havanese is their gait. These small dogs walk proudly with their heads raised high with a soft, springy gait. The springy gait is due to the fact that their front legs are shorter than the hind legs. Dogs of this breed are playful, great companions, get along well with kids, and get along with other pets. Somewhat cowardly, but trying in any way to hide it, getting involved in the game.
This small-sized dog breed comes in a wide variety of colors and currently ranks as the 24th most popular dog breed among those registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC).
The Havanese is a member of the Bichon group of dogs, whose common ancestors are thought to include the Bichon Frise and the Maltese.
Breed enthusiasts believe their ancestors may have been brought to Cuba—where they became popular—either by Spanish colonists or Italian sea captains.
