In 2014, thousands of wild Chihuahuas were sighted in the Phoenix, Arizona area, prompting animal control officials to step in and trap these small dogs.

It is believed that the long-haired Chihuahuas were bred in the United States by crossing smooth-haired Chihuahuas with Papillons and Pomeranians.
