The Irish Wolfhound is an upright, shaggy giant who will willingly share with you the secret of the purest and most sincere friendship. Born for dangerous and difficult work, today this formidable giant has retired a little, without losing his athletic skills and hunting instincts. Nevertheless, do not rush to be enchanted by the brutal and emphatically harsh appearance of the Irish wolfhound, and do not try to consider in him a fierce protector of your property. Under the guise of seriousness and feigned menacingness, there is an intelligent, sensitive, but completely not suspicious creature who will never allow himself to offend a person.
Irish wolfhounds can stand 34 to 35 inches tall and weigh up to 180 pounds – these dogs are MASSIVE! In fact, they are the tallest breed included in the American Kennel Club.
The breed was originally used in war to pull men from their horses and chariots, as well as to hunt boar, wolves, deer, and elk (which stood six feet tall at the shoulder!).
These days, they are best known for their sweet, intelligent, and family-oriented personalities.
