Swiss Mountain Dogs are distinguished by their sophistication and noble beauty. The extraordinary structure of the torso, the shine of the brightly colored coat, and the gaze directed into the soul of the beholder attract the attention of all passers-by, who are surprised to ask the owner for the name of the dog’s breed.
The breed got its hard-to-pronounce name in honor of the Entlebuch Valley, located in the Swiss cantons of Bern and Lucerne.
At first, small herding dogs were classified as a clan of the Appenzeller Sennenhund, who had the same working qualifications and identical coat color.
In 1913, the breeds were delimited by entering the Entlebuchers into the studbooks as an independent variety of the Swiss Mountain Dogs.
