Mastiffs can have strong protective instincts and need to be properly socialized with both people and animals.
They make excellent watchdogs, although they tend to not bark as much as other breeds.
The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1885, and a Mastiff named Bayard was the first of his breed to be registered with the AKC.
