As a boy, Burns and his brother had a border collie named Luath, who died tragically. Burns’ poem “The Twa Dogs” is in part an ode to Luath, and a statue of Burns in Boston’s Winthrop Square features Luath standing eternally by his master’s side.
Border collies are born to herd, but their intelligence, drive, and eagerness to please means that humans often successfully employ border collies in a variety of other capacities.
They make excellent therapy dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and medical-alert dogs for seizures or other medical emergencies.
