You may have a number of cute options to choose from at the pet store. Animals and fish are all so lovely, and you may be having a hard time picking one to take home with you.

As the title suggests, we are suggesting that you get cats. And for very good reasons.

Cats, for some reason, have a bad reputation for being moody and bipolar. But, if you get to know more about cats, and how they think and operate, you will get to see their true, beautiful nature.

You shouldn’t adopt cats if you already have fish, reptiles, or birds at home. They will just become prey. However, if you have any other animals, or none at all, cats will bring sunshine to your plain world.

Excited to know all the benefits of having cute cats as your roommates? Let’s begin!

Cats are Quiet

One of the best traits of cats is that they are quiet. They only meow when they need food, and purr when they feel loved. How cute is that!

Although reptiles don’t make any noise, they are high maintenance. As for aquatic animals, their tank needs to be cleaned often, which can be annoying.

Cats, on the other hand, only need to bathe once in a while. Since they stay indoors most of the time, they don’t really get dirty. It is totally the opposite with dogs, though!

Therefore, if you get cats, you can be sure that they won’t start barking or screeching once the doorbell rings. Even if they spot a burglar outside, they will warn you stealthily, like real pros!

They are Not Overly Expensive

You need to be a millionaire to be able to afford exotic pets, such as leopards or snakes. However, cats are affordable, and you don’t have to be rich for them.

Cats are not high maintenance. They need a high quality diet, annual examination and emergency attention from the vet, core vaccinations, bathing, brushing, litter box arrangement, neuting, spraying, and a safe environment.

Cat food, bathing tools, a litter box and toys may vary in price. If you want to save money, just buy things that are more on the affordable side. Overall, looking after them is not complicated.

They Don’t Need Too Much Space

Cats are quite small. However, some breeds, like the Burmese cat, Persian cat, Egyptian Mau, Ragdoll, American Bobtail, Norwegian Forest cat, Maine Coon, Pixiebob, Bengal cat, British Shorthair, Turkish Van, Ragamuffin, and Siberian cat may be quite large in size.

The large cats need more luxury, whereas the average ones are happy with whatever you give them. Even when you give them a bed, they would rather cuddle up with you at night.

They are also very lithe, and can move through gaps effortlessly. Occasionally though, they will bump into things, and drop them by accident.

Honestly, they won’t grow more than four kilograms. Even the large ones have a limit of eight kilograms.

They Take Care of Pests In the House

By having cats at home, you are saving tons of money on removing pests and keeping them away for good. Cats love to hunt, and they are going to start meddling with any rats or bugs that enter your house.

Additionally, when the rodents realize what a potential pain in the arse your roommate is, they will just leave your house alone. It’s such a blessing to have cats, right?

They are Not Clingy

Cats are not moody. They are just too intelligent for us.

Cats understand the concept of personal space. They don’t want you to disturb them when they are busy. They won’t disturb you either when you are busy, unless it’s an emergency.

They know when and how to mind their own businesses, and whenever they get a chance, they will sleep.

Not only are they the silent types, these kitties are peaceful as well. Your roommates love to relax, and stay focused on themselves. In fact, they can be your meditation teacher!

They Can Pamper Themselves

You must have learned about some of the essential characteristics of cats by now. They are intelligent, peaceful, low maintenance, respect personal space, and keep homes free from pests.

Guess what? They are also clean freaks!

If you observe cats, you will notice that they like to use their tongues to clean themselves very often. In fact, they do this as often as they take a nap.

So, even if you forget to bathe or groom them, they can take care of themselves. Truly, the most independent of all the pets!

They are Therapeutic

Many researches confirm that cute cats are highly beneficial for people with illnesses. Cats can lower the blood pressure of people suffering from heart diseases.

They can also help those who have anxiety and depression. They just have this calming effect on humans, and people can’t help but feel better around them.

You won’t believe this, but their ‘purring’ can heal bones, tendons, and muscles. Listening to their purring, and watching them can calm the nervous system.

Furthermore, many people who live by themselves adopt cats, and they have never regretted it. These little fluff balls are great companions in the house, and they are super smart at the same time.

Final Thoughts

Even people who never owned a cat know how adorable it is. Have you noticed how popular cats are in the pet community? No wonder!

Today, your newsfeed gets flooded with cat memes all the time. Moreover, there are so many videos on the Internet about cats, that you hardly watch TV anymore.

But won’t it be healthier if you just have a cat as your roommate, instead of watching other people’s cats on YouTube? You can watch your little precious baby all day long, and you get to play with it as well!

So, we hope that this article will help you to make the best decision at the pet shop. It’s going to be so worth it!

Did you know that cats can nap an average of fifteen hours a day? Well, according to petmd.com some felines can nap as long as twenty hours out of twenty-four, and there is nothing wrong with their health either. With this much sleeping, we tend to notice various sleeping patterns in our feline companions which we may not readily decode. As much as cats are lovely, they have a pretty mysterious nature. It is true that we can tell a lot about how cats understand their environment and how they respond to it from their behavior including sleep patterns.

Here are seven sleeping positions your cat will always display and what they really mean.

Curling up

credit to Michael Broad

What we humans like to call the fetal position, to a cat is curling up into a crescent with the tail running around the paws towards the head; this does not necessarily mean discomfort to cats as we are usually not comfy in the fetal position. Your cat is not afraid of the environment even though it is clearly not taking any chances by revealing vulnerable body parts. Also, this position means that the cat is trying to retain body temperature.

Tucking position

Animals in the wild will never close their eyes in the open, this instinct to protect themselves is intrinsically woven into their nature. For cats, even with domestication, sometimes they merely feel the need to hide away in safe, warm, cozy places. You will sometimes find your cat hidden away in your closet, inside dirty clothes in the clothes basket, inside boxes or even underneath the curtains. Sometimes the cat is just looking for alone time and does not wish to be disturbed.

The half-closed eye

Cats are predators, and that fact will not change however domesticated they are. One thing about predators is that they hunt and consequently do not like the thought of being hunted in return. For this reason, you may notice that even though the cat is dozing off, it's not closing its eyes all the way. While in this position, you may also realize that the cat's ears are actively moving about; this is a very shallow form of sleep which can last for hours. The cat is acutely aware of what is going on in its surroundings, and any slight noise or unusual sound will jolt the cat into complete attention.

There is another version of this kind of sleeping where one eye is wide open, and the other is entirely shut. This form of sleep is known as Unihemispheric Slow-wave Sleep which is when one part of the brain is unconscious while the other is awake. It is characterized by one closed eye with the other open. The half of the brain asleep is usually in a deep sleep, a form of NRM. This sleeping pattern is beneficial since it provides rest even in places with a sense of threat.

The open pose

credit LULAMEJ

At times a cat may sleep on its back with the hind limbs stretched out like a man with back pain and the front ones folded on its breast. In this position, the cat is usually fast asleep and feels secure and safe in its environment. This kind of vulnerability does not happen a lot because it shows that the cat has thrown care to the wind. You may notice your cat sleeping like this when it's content and is in your company or that of people it considers family and safe to be around with. However, startling a cat in this vulnerable position is not a good idea; it could lead to scratches or bites.
Cuddling into a ball

There is nothing as adorable as seeing your feline friend asleep snuggled into a ball of fur, right? But this position is not likely to presage anything good. If you have seen a sick cat, then you may have noticed that it tends to compress itself on all fours with head bent and eyes tightly shut. When a cat does this, it could be a sign that it is suffering from something and is probably in pain. It might indicate serious health problems as the cat feels like it should stay in an elevated position. This position could also mean that the cat does not feel secure in its environment and it is anticipating threats. You may not be aware of what your pet does to signal you to what is happening to them, or you may be noticing weird pet behavior you can't accurately pinpoint.
Sleeping on the side

This is one of the most comfortable sleeping positions for cats. When your cat sleeps on its side with the limbs outstretched, it means that your cat is not just content, but that it does not see any need to stay alert; this is a relaxation mode which usually results in deep sleep. If you want to find out more sleeping patterns of your favorite pets, then go here.

Cats are fascinating creatures with little tidbits of mystery about them. But since they can't speak to us, it's imperative that we learn what we can about their habits to know what is in fact out of place and what is typical kitty behavior. Maybe you want to alter your cat's sleeping pattern, or you just want to know more, check this site out.

Tucked paws

Sometimes a cat will sleep on all fours but the limbs are safely tucked away inside, and the tail is either outstretched or weaved around it. This position shows that the cat feels safe and comfortable, but it does not mind some action if there is any. After a while, the cat's head may drop on the floor; this should not worry you. Your cat is merely feeling lazy, and it's a good thing, but it also prefers to stay upright just in case something interesting presents itself.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum but am hoping to get some good advice on what cat food to go for.

I currently have an older cat, Tinker Bell, who I adopted 2 and a half years ago when she was 10 and in 2 days time we'll be welcoming our kitten Pixie.

In all the preparation for getting Pixie I've discovered that there's a lot more to cat nutrition than I realised. I've always known the main brands were not good and so they are banned in our house. Instead we went for supermarket own brand thinking it was healthier but I realise now that's still not the best diet.

I've since started reading into the various options and have got myself so confused my head is spinning from it all!

I've tried to look at the nutritional attributes for each food but not sure if I'm looking at the right bits or for the right kind of values. So far I think I've narrowed it down to:

Nature's Menu
Lily's Kitchen
Thrive

I've also found in Sainsbury's today 'Naturo' so I've tried that with Tinker Bell and it's gone down well!

My main queries I'd like advice on are:

What should I be looking for when comparing different foods?

Can the cat and kitten be fed on the same good quality food or do they need separate diets?

What are the best foods to balance price and quality? Obviously with 2 mouths to feed money has to be an object but we are willing to pay a bit extra if it's going to be better for them.

Sorry this has ended up a long post, am looking forward to all the helpful advice to hopefully de-fuzz my brain!

(Sorry if they have and I've missed it...).

The boys have been a bit hit and miss with food, and after a lot of research I decided that the Whiskas they were being fed at the sanctuary wasn't really all that good. I've tried a few foods with them, my priority being something with a high meat content (not derivatives). I've found COSMA food on ZooPlus, and they absolutely love it. I have read however that the Tuna is the only complete food in that range. So, my question is, if I feed the cats the COSMA foods, but also give them Applaws Dry Cat Food (chicken, complete) would that make their diets complete? The dry food is listed as a complete food, so my plan would be to feed them a small 85g tin each in the AM, dry food at lunch, small tin each for dinner and then dry food to follow.

Look forward to your replies!

Thanks all,

She is around 19 years old so a bit scared to take her to the vet in case they put her down as they had done with a previous cat. The thing is she acts as normal, eats and cleans herself without showing any signs of pain at all - but just has a quite tough looking droopy mouth. Has anybody else experienced this or have any suggestions?

Photo attached.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm new here! I found these forums while searching for cat food information and I need your help...

My almost 4 year old cat Pipo was acting strange yesterday, asking for attention and leading me to his litter box to show me nothing was coming out while trying to pee. He even jumped in the bathtub (he hates it) and started scratching the tub while I was in the toilet. I don't know if he thought that that was my "litter box" and was trying to tell me his wasn't working. He tried to pee on the rug too because he was probably thinking that his box was the problem. He was so confused it makes me wanna cry...

My dad left for England 2 days ago so it was just me (I'm 20 but I don't have a drivers license) and my brother, whom I had to convince to take us to the vet. No one was actually taking me serious so it took a lot of convincing, and my dad even told me that it was probably nothing and to just wait. Long story short, we went to the vet and they told us if we had waited 1 more day he could've died and that it was probably crystals.

So now he's there with a catheter and they told me he will have to stay with it for 72 hours, plus another 24 hours to see if he can pee after. They called me today and told me that yes, something was blocking the way because it was hard to get the catheter in, his blood and urine results were fine, his temperature was normal now (it was low when we left him there) but that he wasn't eating anything. I'm hoping everything turns out alright...

So... diet. He always ate Purina Friskies dry food (my dad buys it) and he drinks tons of water. I think it was to compensate for the dry food because it was seriously a lot of water, he had 2 bowls for water refilled every morning, and by dinner they were dry. We had a female persian when I was little and she ate dry food but never had problems, but she's female so there's that.

I started reading about dry food and how wet food is way better so I want to change his diet to mainly wet food. Problem is, my dad is the one that pays for his food and 5kg of dry food is less than 20 euros and lasts for almost 2 months... Not to mention the ~250euros this trip to the animal hospital is going to cost... The vet told me we had to buy Royal Canin Cat Urinary S/O for him but that's dry too and the wet version is too expensive.

I asked the vet from the clinic where we adopted Pipo for an opinion, and told her I was reading other opinions on the internet, and how a wet food only diet seems to be better according to it, but she told me that all her cats are fed mainly dry food and sometimes, as a treat, 3 or 4 times in a week, she'd give them wet food. Of course I will be feeding him the food they recommend for the time needed but I asked her "How about, after stabilizing, feeding him 80% normal wet food 20% dry urinary food? And she told me that the reverse would be better, 80% dry 20% wet.

Now I don't know who to trust. I'm from Portugal and I'm used to people having very fixed mentalities. I don't know if this is a case of that. She mentioned how, some years ago, wet food was said to be terrible for cats and to just feed dry, but that it was changing a bit now and that wet food is "acceptable" now. As a treat. But that's not what I'm reading at all on the internet and I seriously want what's best for my cat.

I've been looking into zooplus and into Animonda, Bozita and Smilla. They're the cheaper ones and accepted in the "cat food list" here. I was thinking about 200g wet food a day and a bit of dry urinary food to complement it, and that would cost around 30 euros a month. I think I can convince my dad that it's for the best and even help him pay for it with the money I save from birthdays and christmas, etc. My cat is big but overweight (7kg), so he needs to lose some weight. He's sterilized, sleeps all day and is an indoor cat, super afraid of going outside, so no stress (I think). He drinks tap water, could that influence his health? A lot of people choose to drink tap water around here because it's pretty ok to drink, I don't think it's a very hard water, probably medium.

I think that's all, sorry for the long text... What do you recommend me to do?
(I'm attaching some pics of him too so you see the good boy he is)

Taurine in cats is absolutely critical, and if you feed your cat a homemade diet, it must be supplemented by one of the various forms available. For cats that are feed commercial foods, it is also something that every owner should consider supplementing simply because the cooking process can destroy over half all of its value.

This nutrient is so critical, that a deficiency of it can cause circulation problems as well as cell death in your cats system, as well as low fertility rates and fetal re-absorptions. It can also lead to growth diseases in kittens that do survive the birth process.

What is it?

Taurine is a beta-amino acid that is synthesized in the liver from dietary sulphur containing amino acids, and than absorbed into your cats small intestines. Most all animals can manufacture taurine from other amino acids in their body if they suffer a deficiency, but this is where your cat becomes separated form most every other animal; they can not manufacture it.

It is critical for your cat as contrary to classical amino acids that are included in the very complex proteins, it stays in a free form. Your cat has several tissues that are very rich in taurine and they include the muscles of their heart, the central nervous system, as well as the retina of their eyes. However, perhaps its most important function in your cat is with their biliary salts.

Taurine in cats is also critical in the formation of biliary salts that are essential for the proper digestion of fats in their small intestine. Other animals simply utilize other acids in this critical process if taurine levels become deficient, but for some reason your cats system can not perform this function. Because of this, your cat relies on a dietary intake of taurine and is believed to be one of the major reasons, if not the major reason, that cats must have animal products to survive, as it is not found at all in vegetables.

Your cats eyes:

Taurine in cats also plays several other very important roles in your pet starting with their vision. The retina of your cats eye, which is the membrane that covers the eye and forms pictures, has about 300 times the amount of taurine as compared to what is found in the blood. Simply put, if your cat does not receive enough taurine in their diet, it kills their eyes. It will gradually begin a process that will induce progressive degeneration of the retina, and within two years, your cat becomes totally blind.

By correcting the taurine deficiency it does stop this progression, but the lesions that it causes are not reversible and can still result in damage to your cats vision.

Cardiac functions:

Taurine in cats accounts for about fifty percent of the free amino acids that are found in cats cardiac muscles, and if it deficient, it will quickly lead to what is called cardiomyopathy. This can cause dilation on the left side of your cats heart, which plays a major role in the hearts over function. Dilation can lead to several heart problems and there have been several recent studies that have demonstrated that once the levels are returned back to normal, the dilation stops.

If your cats heart continues to be weak on the left side, it can not aerate the blood flow properly and will quickly lead to both circulation problems as well cell death in their heart.

Reproduction:

Taurine in cats also plays a very important role in your cats reproductive processes. Taurine deficiency can inflict several huge impacts on this process as it can cause a lack of fertility, abortions, as well as what is referred to as fetal re-absorption. However, it can also cause several different abnormalities in the litter as well as stunting the growth of kittens that do survive this process.

Nervous system:
Taurine is also critical for your cats overall nervous system as it is needed to maintain both the development as well of the integrity of this system. If it is not found in the diet or supplemented, it affects blood coagulation, immune reactions, as well as damaging your cats respiratory tissues.

What are the correct levels?

Taurine in cats can be supplied by the diet supplements. If you feed your cat dry food diets, they will require at least 1000 to 1200 mg/kg in their food. The term mg/kg simply implies milligrams per kilogram of food. If your cat has a canned diet, they will require a lot more taurine as they will need at least 2200 to 2500 mg/kg. Both types of commercial foods are cooked and processed, but dry forms hold taurine levels better than do moist or canned foods.

If you choose raw diets or homemade diets, you must supplement these diets with taurnine. Pills and tablets come in 50, 125, 500, 850, as well as 100 mg. levels, but there are also several other very good options. Supplements are also available in chewable tablets and treats, and well as powder and liquid forms. The actual mg that you give your cat will depend on their body weight as well as their current taurine levels and should be left entirely to your veterinarian.

Summary:

Taurine in cats is very often overlooked in homemade diets which can have catastrophic affects on your cat. It is very easy and quite inexpensive to properly supplement this critical amino acid, and if you choose a raw or homemade diet, have the taurine levels tested before, after a few weeks, and than at least a couple of times a year.

If you use conventional diets, you should still have the taurine levels tested as most processed foods can not meet your cats requirements and they can not produce it on their own.

Liquid Vitamins for Humans Cats and Dogs
