Many cat and dog owners have already heard the name of this drug: Synulox is an effective all-rounder in the fight against bacterial diseases. We explain how the drug works for your dog and what you should pay attention to during therapy.

What is Synulox?

Synulox for Dogs: Important Information About the Drug 7

Synulox is a prescription drug. It contains the active ingredient amoxicillin and belongs to the semisynthetic penicillins.

As a broad-spectrum antibiotic, it is used against many bacteria.

The drug works comparatively quickly. The dog’s body can quickly make it available throughout the organism through oral ingestion. Bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics because they develop special enzymes that make therapy ineffective. But Synulox also contains the active ingredient clavulanic acid. This can deactivate the enzymes and thus fight bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. At the same time, the active ingredients have hardly any side effects. Synulox for dogs is available in 250 mg and 500 mg tablets. There are also 50 mg tablets for cats, which can also be used on very light dogs.

When does the vet prescribe Synulox?

The animal prescribes the antibiotic for bacterial infections in dogs or cats. It is mainly used for the following infections:

  • Infections of the skin and gums
  • Urinary tract infections such as cystitis with bacterial involvement
  • Infection of the digestive tract
  • Respiratory infections
  • Soft-tissue infections in the form of bacterial abscesses

As a broad-spectrum antibiotic, Synulox acts against brothels, E. coli, Pasteurella, salmonella, streptococci, and staphylococci, among others. A test for bacteria does not always precede the prescription of antibiotics. But the bacteria present can be determined via smear, blood, or urine tests.

What are the known side effects of Synulox?

A big advantage of Synulox is the low side effects. Most dogs and cats tolerate the therapy very well. In rare cases, pet owners report allergic reactions. Warning: the antibiotic is harmful to rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and mice.

You should keep this in mind when giving Synulox

The vet will give you precise instructions on how often and for how long to give the antibiotic to your dog. Be sure to follow these instructions. Because even if the symptoms are gone, the disease can break out again if you stop taking the drug too soon.

Since most dogs like the taste of the tablets, giving them the drug is easy.

You can give the Synulox tablets whole or crushed with some food. Store the drug at temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees. In rare cases, the veterinarian will give the antibiotic as a daily injection.

Dosage & price: what does Synulox cost for dogs?

The prices for the drug vary depending on the pharmacy or veterinarian. The cost of therapy depends primarily on the dog’s weight. As a rule, 12.5 mg per kilo of bodyweight is given in the form of tablets twice a day. Treatment lasts at least five to ten days. A common price for Synulox is $30 for 10 tablets with 250 mg Amoxicillin. For example, a 10-kilogram dog needs half a tablet twice a day. One pack is enough for complete therapy. With a dog weighing 20 kg, you can expect around $50 for ten days of therapy because of the higher dose of tablets. In the case of skin and bladder diseases as well as abscesses, therapy with the antibiotic can last up to a month.

Read the package insert for risks and side effects and ask your doctor or pharmacist.
